Residential Recycling

Residential Recycling

Recyclables must be placed in a separate bin from trash and are picked up on your regular trash day. Bins are available at the Township Administrative Office from the Public Works Department. The first bin is free of charge.

Can be included: Can NOT be included:

Glass - Food & beverage bottles & jars only. Rinse clean, remove lids or cap, DO NOT BREAK, labels need not be removed.

Aluminum, steel & bi-metal -Food & beverage cans only. Rinse clean, remove lids or cap, labels need not be removed.

Paper – Newspapers & inserts, magazines & catalogs, junk mail & envelopes, paper bags, phone books, office paper (any color), shredded paper (in a closed paper bag), paperboard packaging (i.e. tissue boxes), paper towel & toilet paper rolls, food boxes (i.e. cereal, snack & cracker), pizza boxes (if not food soiled) and cardboard boxes, flattened and of a size that will fit in the recycle bin.

Plastics -Plastic bottles marked PETE or HDPE, 1 thru 7 narrow neck bottles only. Examples include milk jugs, detergent bottles, soda bottles. Numbers are located on the bottom of the container. Rinse clean and remove lids. Labels need not be removed.

No aerosol spray cans or paint cans

No aluminum foil, pie plates, siding etc.

No ceramics, cookware, china, drinking glasses, cups or bowls

No clothing hangers, light bulbs or light fixtures

No plastic bags

No scrap metal, pots & pans, wire, etc.

No window glass, plate glass or mirrors

No yard waste, etc.

No hypodermic needles

GRASS: You may put your grass clippings and other yard waste out for the trash, however they will count toward your trash container limit.

Commercial Recycling

Commercial Recycling
Pennsylvania State Act 101 of 1988 and York Township Ordinance 2006-12 require nonresidential establishments to recycle. Nonresidential establishments include all commercial, municipal, institutional, and community groups that do not fit into a residential category. To comply with the State and Local laws, you are required to recycle the following items:

1. Aluminum
2. Steel and bimetallic cans
3. High-grade office paper
4. Corrugated paper (cardboard)
5. Glass (clear, brown, and green)
6. Leaf Waste

Electronic Recycling

Electronic Recycling

York Township, in cooperation with the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA), will accept discarded electronics items on a quarterly basis. The collection dates for will be the third Saturday in February, May, August and November from 7:00 am to 11:30 am at the York Township Municipal Campus. Please enter the municipal complex from Coventry Road. Signs will direct you to the drop off point where public works employees will assist in unloading your vehicle.

If you miss the York Township date you can drop off your electronics directly at the York County Solid Waste Authority Transfer Site located on Flour Mill Road in Manchester Township the third Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm. See www.ycswa.com for more information.

Curbside Yard Waste Recycling

The curbside yard waste collection program is done by PENN Waste. Pickup will be the 4th Saturday of each month from March through November. Two additional pickups will be held the 2nd Saturday in April and November. Woody waste is defined as material consisting of tree limbs, bushes and brush trimmings. The waste material should be placed in biodegradable kraft bags or bundled in lengths of not more than four (4) feet long and weighing less than 50 pounds. The biodegradable kraft bags are available for purchase at the Township for $.75 per
bag. Please do not place yard waste in plastic bags.

Tree and Branch Drop Off

The township provides tree and branch/limb drop off service for the benifit of township residents. The drop off is generally the first Saturday of the month. Some months it may be the second Saturday of the month due to a holiday. For specific dates please select the newsletter link on the left side of this page. Drop off time at the Township Building is from 7-11:30 a.m. Residents are permitted to drop off tree branches and/or other like materials. Please enter by the way of Coventry Road and signs will direct you to the drop off area where Public Works employees will assist you in unloading your vehicle.

Please note that tree and branch/limb drop off service is for the benifit of York Township residents and photo identification will be required.

Trash and Recycling Contractor

Penn Waste is the trash and recycling contractor for York Township.

  • You may use a can or plastic bag not exceeding 32 gallons in size and not weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Toter service can be provided by Penn Waste. Penn Waste will only be able to service toters provided by Penn Waste. They will not be able to service OTHER HAULER'S TOTERS (Examples - Waste Management, York Waste, Store bought, etc.)
  • Boxes or bundles may be set out as long as they do not exceed a weight of 50 pounds or a size limit of more than 4 feet in any dimension. Please note that such a box or bundle will count toward your container limit.
  • You may purchase Special Bags for extra trash (see Trash Fees below). The special bags are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Penn Waste or the York Township Administrative Office.
  • Excess bags or containers that are not the special bags WILL NOT be collected.

Trash Fees

Below is a list of the trash options available:

  • TOTER SERVICE: 96 gallon Toter which conveniently stores three 32 gallon bags is available for $49.41 + $1.50 Admin fee = $50.91 per quater.
  • THREE BAG SERVICE: 3 - 32 gallon trash containers or bags is available for $31.41 + $1.50 Admin fee = $32.91 per quater.
  • ADDITIONAL SPECIAL BAGS: $3.50 each - 32 gallon container.

You will be billed by Penn Waste four times year for a three month period each July, October, January and April. You may pay by cash, check or MC/VISA, Am Ex.. Any account not paid within 30 days will be assessed a late fee and possible collection proceedings. NO REFUNDS will be given to accounts turned over to collection.
